Cruisin for Shelby 05-September-2010
I was able to hobbly my weary bones to Lexington NC today to enjoy the ‘Ponies of the Piedmont’ Cruisin for Shelby Cruise-In, a benefit for the family of Shelby Chisom.
This was absolutely spectacular turnout… perfect weather, plenty of room, and… Mmmmm… funnel cakes!
I love this kind of Cruise-In, because there’s just a little bit of everything. Old pickups, new cars, (sometimes it’s hard for me to believe I lived long enough to be able to say ‘New Muscle Cars’ again…) classics, hot rods, rat rods, imports, motorcycles… all side by side and together for a good cause.
That big bright green Plymouth station wagon brought back memories! When I was a kid, my next door neighbor, Brent, would buy these up to run in demolition derbies! Although I think we all have at least one car in our past that we think about, “I wish I still had that…”
I was there from about 2pm to 4pm, and the cool rides just kept trickling in all day long.
And being a Camaro guy, I have to rib the POP guys just a bit, and point out the Ford ride I snapped a picture of proudly sporting a Corvette engine!
Volkswagens. Fire Trucks. Ice Cream trucks!
I could kick myself for forgetting the gentleman’s name that was at both Pilot Mountain last night and this cruise today, who was letting all the spectators sign his car! I believe he said this was the 5th or 6th cruise he’d been to collecting signatures, and there wasn’t a spare inch left today! I did give him a card though, so if he writes to me I’ll add in his name!
The fire trucks were about to put on a show for the crowd when they got called out for real action! So we got all the lights and sirens in a real fire situation. In some of the pictures you can see the smoke rising over the school, although I believe the fire was several miles off. It appeared to be under control as I left.
A Sunday afternoon well spent under a blue sky and surrounded by cool cars…
